## Presented by Anthony Harradine - Potts-Baker Institute, Prince Alfred College

Proudly sponsored by Casio Education Australia.

The following free workshop(s) aim to share quality ideas about the teaching and learning of mathematics. While some workshops are specific to CASIO technology, others are technology generic. No matter what brand/model or form of technology (Geogebra, TI, etc.) you use, you are welcome to attend.

Catering will be provided - please notify of any dietary requirements in your additional notes section of registration.

Please bring pen, paper and electronic technology with you.

# WORKSHOP: Things that stack

One use of a mathematical model (functional in this case) is to predict an outcome that we do not want to actually make happen, perhaps because it is too costly or time consuming or …

In this task you will be presented with a stacking scenario and be asked to develop a mathematical model. After making it you will be asked to think hard about its validity and finally you will get to test it.

This is a tried and proven activity that students love and engage with strongly. Great satisfaction seems to be gained.

Professional video resources will be supplied (no cost) that will assist you in delivering this task in your classroom.

Suitable for Year 9/10 students as a learning activity or assessment activity - your choice!

# WORKSHOP: Creating a mathematical model

Describing the behaviour of systems and objects within a system is one of the important applications of mathematics.

Using a series of bouncing balls, students will have to draw upon various function types, the notion of piece-wise functions and parameters to conquer the task you will meet in this workshop; a workshop with an exciting and unexpected ending.

Suitable for Year 11 students as a learning activity or assessment activity - your choice!
