ADDs - graphics calculator programs

  • fx-9860 AU Series
  • Online tuition

  • Replacement Units
  • ADDs
  • TiGM
  • Ready to teach

These small programs have been created to assist in the teaching of mathematics. They are designed to help teach a single concept, whether it be in Number Theory, Algebra or many other topics. They have been proven to be extremely powerful in the classroom, both at engaging students and helping them understand the concept.

These ADDs are most often a part of the Noel Baker for School Mathematics Replacement Units, but can be used independently. Where needed, they come with a support document to help teachers with implementation and answer commonly asked questions.

It is also worth checking out the USA Casio Education website .

Download complete packages

You can also download all of the ADDs and support sheets in a single .zip file. Mac users will need Winzip, which is free to download.

To save a copy, please right-click the 'download' icon and choose the 'save' option.

How do I convert a 9850 program into a 9860 program? »

Converting 9850 programs into 9860 programs using the FA124

The FA124 program is capable of converting older programs from the 9850 into the 9860 (and vice versa). Below are the steps to follow.

  1. Firstly, you must have FA124 downloaded and installed on your computer. If you do not have it, then you can get it from the Casio Worldwide website.
  2. Open up the FA124 program.
  3. Ensure you are in the 9850 mode of the FA124 program by clicking Tool » Model Type » fx-7400/CFX-9850 series.
  4. Next you need to open your 9850 .cat file. Click File » Open and locate your .cat program. Select it by clicking on it and press Open.
  5. If you have multiple programs in the one file, you can see them individually by double-clicking + Program.
  6. Now go Tool » Convert » fx-9860 <=> CFX 9850 conversion and you will be prompted to enter a name for the new file. Enter in your file name (it can be the same as the 9850 file) and can only have a maximum of 8 chahracters. Click OK.
  7. The conversion has taken place and you are taken back to the 9850 mode. Now enter the 9860 mode of the FA124 program. Click Tool » Model Type » fx-9860 and you will see two windows - fx-9860 and Computer.
  8. Now click File » Open and locate your newly converted program. You will find it in the Casio folder in My Documents.

How do I transfer these programs to my calculator into my 9850 calculator? »

Transfering to Your Calculator

ADDs are small but dynamic learning objects written for the CFX 9850 series calculator. They need to be added to your calculator. To do this, you will need to:

  • Download the program (.cat) and save it to your hard-drive.
  • Download a copy of FA 123 (located above if you haven't got a copy already)
  • Install the FA123 on your computer.
  • Open FA123, then open your program file.
  • Read Getting started with the Program-Link FA 123 and other utilities and the file catnoopen.doc (.pdf, 27kb) on how to load it on to your calculator.

It may seem like a lot, but it is only for the first time - and it's worth it!

Assessing Chance

This piece of work is intended to introduce the notion of chance and randomness, and how the study of an overall pattern can be used to help predict outcomes. There is an initial focus on experimental probability, assissted greatly by the graphics calculator and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. The unit has been used in Years 9 and 10 in NSW and offers a very different approach to studying probability.

This set of programs by Charlie Watson of John XXIII College in Perth (1st Dec 97) - for the latest updates of these programs (as well as links to other classroom materials, go to his site:

  • LINEAR - eqn of straight line from gradient and point or 2 points. (Now incorporates D2F for fractional coefficients).
  • PBISECT - same as linear, only returns eqn of perpendicular bisector of 2 points.
  • QUADS - eqn of parabola from 3 points.
  • MARKS - enter max mark, then enter student mark(s) for conversion to % and finish with hi mark  to obtain class average.
  • BORGS - works out aerobic exercise heart rate targets for given age, exercise intensity and level of fitness.
  • D2F - Decimal to fraction converter... (Does it's best... you can tinker with the small program to make it better, but slower)
  • CMPLXRT - finds all nth roots of complex number z.
  • CMPLXPWR - find nth power of complex number z.
  • EZ - evaluates ez where z is a complex number.
  • TRIGSOLV - finds all solutions (exact answers where possible) to sin, cos, tan(A) = x over your chosen range. Choice of degrees or radians.
  • AP - finds / solves / tabulates arithmetic progressions or series.
  • GP - finds / solves / tabulates geometric progressions or series.
  • NWTNRAPH - store f(x) in Y1, then program uses Newton-Raphson method to solve f(x) = 0, displaying ALL iterations after your suggestion for x.
  • LINPRG - solves linear programming problems. Enter inequalities, objective function and that's it!
  • POLYMULT - multiplies any two polynomials (any order) together.
  • POLYDIV - divides any two polynomials, returning quotient and remainder.
  • BINPROB - calculates probablilities associated with Bin(n,p). (Normal approx. option if np>5 and n(1-p)>5.)
  • REACT - Collects up to 50 measurements of your reaction times and puts them into a list for statistical analysis. Depending on the level of analysis, this is suitable for Years 7 to 12.
  • GUESS - Collects up to 50 student estimates of 5 seconds and puts them into a list for analysis.
  • MAV - Enter time series in lists 1 & 2 and this program returns moving averages (you choose no. of points), residuals, seasonal adjustsments, graphs, predictions, etc.
  • TRAPRULE - Introduction to finding area beneath a curve using trapeziums. Store function in f1 first. Uses lists 1 to 3 for working.

  • AMODEL - This program can be used as a tool for examining whether a particular function model is appropriate for the data. Users are able to check difference tables, successor ratios, and perform transformations on list variables such as log-log, semi-log, inverse, inverse squared, squared and cubed. You can also perform least square regressions on the data and view the graphs.
  • BALLPATH - This simple program simulates the path of a ball (with assumptions), and calculates and displays the horizontal displacement of the ball after returning to earth.
  • BIRTH - This program simulates the Birthday Problem, by using random integers, and reporting whether a duplicate birthday has been found.
  • CORREL - This program helps students build their skills in estimating correlation coefficients from graphs of bivariate data. It can also be used as a source of data collection for student improvement on such skills.
  • DRAWDERV - This is like the famous 'Green Globs', but for derivatives. It graphs the function in Y1, and then allows the user to plot points they predict would lie on the graph of its derivative function. When finished, it constructs the graph of the derivative function, so that the user can observe the closeness of their predictions.
  • INTAREA - This provides a visual representation of the numeric integration approximations, such as left and right rectangles, midpoint and trapezoid rules. It also calculates these areas, and compares them to the internal calculation used by the calculator.
  • LSREGR - A first principles approach to least squares regression, which helps students visualise how the algorithm works. Students then enter rules which minimise the sum of the square differences.
  • NORMPROB - Visually constructs and calculates normal probabilities, for a user entered mu and sigma. Includes Pr(x>a),Pr(x<a),and Pr(a<x<b).
  • QUAD1 - Simple quadratic solver, which only returns solutions if they are real. Designed to help students develop programming techniques.
  • QUAD2 - An extension of QUAD2, designed to return complex solutions as well.
  • SECANT - Illustration of how the gradient of a secant PQ approaches the gradient of the tangent at P as the value of h approaches zero. Also returns the tangent equation.
  • WINDFIX - Windfix gives you the option of adjusting the Xmin and Xmax of the current viewing window so that the trace cursor increments in friendlier amounts (eg tenths). This is not always successful, but can be very useful.
